What kind of service hatch can I install a Zigbee transformer behind? I understand the protocol is not very intrusive and will it work behind a metal hatch for example?

A standard metal hatch or plaster hatch is a good solution. Zigbee works un obstructed for 30 meters, but each partition board reduces 5-10m of the range. So a couple of plasterboards won't interfere with the signal. We have tested in the shop as follows: 15m distance, glass/aluminium exterior door and driver inside the cabinet. Works fine =)
