What is IP classification?

The IP rating is an internationally used system that defines the level of protection of a luminaire and transformer against different environmental conditions. The IP rating uses two numbers, the first indicating protection against dust (0, no protection - 6, dust-tight). And the second against moisture (0, not protected - 8, resistant to continuous immersion in water).

Examples of protection levels

IP20

The first number indicates protection against dust and foreign objects. 2 means that the luminaires are protected against objects of 12.5mm and larger. 0 indicates that the luminaire is not protected against water. IP20 rated luminaires and transformers are therefore only suitable for use in dry indoor environments.

IP44

LedStore has a range of IP44 rated luminaires. This means that the luminaire is protected against small pieces of 1mm and splashing water. IP44 protected luminaires are suitable for use on covered terraces, for example.

IP54

We also have a number of luminaires that are IP54 rated, but this is where the obvious stumbling block comes in for many. An IP54 luminaire is no better protected against water than an IP44. The first number indicates protection against dust and the second number against water. So IP54 is better protected against dust, but the water tolerance is the same.

IP65

IP 6 is the highest numerical level of dust protection, i.e. a luminaire protected to IP65 is dust-tight. The second number, 5, means that the luminaire is protected against water spray.

IP67

A luminaire marked IP67 is dustproof and the second number 7 indicates that the luminaire is resistant to momentary immersion in water.

Our range includes LED luminaires and transformers with different IP ratings. If you have any questions about the suitability of a luminaire for your intended location, we will be happy to help!
