What is an IP Rating?
The IP rating is an internationally used system that defines the protection level of a luminaire or driver against various environmental conditions.
The rating consists of two numbers:
-
The first number indicates protection against dust and solid objects (0 = no protection, 6 = completely dust-tight).
-
The second number indicates protection against moisture and water (0 = not protected, 8 = suitable for continuous immersion in water).
Examples of protection levels
IP20
The first digit refers to protection against dust and foreign objects. A rating of 2 means the luminaire is protected against objects 12.5 mm in size or larger. The second digit (0) indicates that the luminaire is not protected against water.Luminaires and drivers with an IP20 rating are therefore suitable only for dry indoor spaces.
IP44
At LedStore, we offer many luminaires with an IP44 rating. This means the luminaire is protected against solid objects larger than 1 mm and splashing water. IP44-rated luminaires are suitable for covered outdoor areas, such as terraces or balconies.IP54
We also have several luminaires with an IP54 rating — but this is where many people get it wrong! An IP54 luminaire is not better protected against water than an IP44 one. The first number indicates protection against dust, and the second against water.
So, IP54 means better dust protection, but the same level of water resistance as IP44.
IP65
In the IP system, 6 is the highest possible dust-protection rating, meaning an IP65 luminaire is completely dust-tight.The second digit, 5, means the luminaire is protected against low-pressure water jets.
IP65-rated luminaires are ideal for outdoor use or humid spaces such as bathrooms.
IP67
A luminaire marked IP67 is dust-tight, and the second digit (7) indicates it can withstand temporary immersion in water.Examples of IP67-rated luminaires in LedStore’s range include recessed deck and ground lights.
