The LED lighting in the showcase is a detail that makes a big difference to the interior design, ambience and usability of the space. Correctly positioned and implemented, the lighting brings out the objects, adds dignity and makes the display case a truly functional part of the interior. Led strip is a particularly good choice for display case lighting as it is unobtrusive, efficient and easy to place in tight spaces.

Good planning beforehand allows for a neat installation and a finished result. In this article, we provide concrete tips on how to implement LED lighting for display cabinets in both kitchen glass cabinets and living room display cabinets. We cover product selection, installation and guidance - from a practical, builder/renovator's perspective.

Why should you light your showcase with LEDs?

Showcase lighting is not just decorative - it also serves practical purposes. It makes the contents of the display case visible, brings out the objects and creates atmosphere and light. LED lights are ideal for this purpose because they produce very little heat and do not heat up the contents of the display case. They are also long-lasting, energy-efficient and easy to control. Thanks to their small size, LED strips are easy to conceal in display case structures, giving a finished look.

Lighting makes the display case a living part of the interior, rather than just a storage unit. Exhibits, porcelain, glassware or decorative objects come to life in a completely different way when illuminated. Well-designed showcase lighting also adds to the atmosphere of the room - even a small amount of light can make a big impact. As the use and style of a display case varies, the lighting needs to be adaptable to suit.

Kitchen glass vignette - functional and atmospheric light

In the kitchen, display cabinets are often prominent, and their contents range from everyday utensils to decorative items. Light brings out the contents of the cabinet, but it also serves a practical purpose, for example as an evening or mood light. In most cases, the LED strip can be placed inside the top shelf or in the cabinet frame so that it is not directly visible to the eye. The light can be directed onto shelves or against a glass wall to provide indirect, soft lighting.

If the display cabinet has glass shelves, the light will pass beautifully through the levels, and it is often sufficient to install an LED strip at the top of the cabinet. In the kitchen, warm tones such as 2 700 K to 3 000 K are often preferred, which blend well with wooden surfaces and cosy interiors. In modern interiors, cooler shades are also good choices. This is why the colour temperature adjustable LED strip is popular.

A very flat SOLO strip was installed in a showcase on an uppermost profile (left). Ledi can also be pointy, the profile cover and depth smoothing out the pointiness.

The strip can be mounted on an aluminium profile, which makes it easier to attach and spreads the light more evenly. The profile's cover design protects the strip from grease and dust. Control can be achieved, for example, with a switch that responds to the opening of the fixture door or with a separate light switch. This makes the light in the display case a practical and stylish detail in everyday life.

Other Zigbee products include a door sensor that turns lights on and off when a door is opened.

Living room display cabinet - highlight details, avoid glare

In a living room or open-plan kitchen, a display cabinet is often part of the interior design and placed in a prominent position, emphasising the aesthetic quality of the lighting. Good display cabinet lighting highlights carefully selected objects - whether they are collectibles, photo frames or glassware. In living room lighting, it is particularly important that the light source does not dazzle or dominate the view. This can be achieved by using an LED strip and hiding it behind a shelf, at the top or on the side of a cupboard, for example.

If the display case has glass shelves, a single strip of light can be used to transmit light to the lower levels. A low power LED strip, for example 7.2 W/m, is sufficient for most living room display cabinets because the lighting is close up. Dimming can be done by remote control, smartphone or wireless wall controller.

The placement of objects also affects the end result - shadows and reflections are controlled by good light direction. With the right choice of lighting and unobtrusive installation, the showcase becomes the eye-catcher of the space.

For showcase lighting, an LED strip in a flush-mounted profile is ideal. For glass shelves, one strip per cabinet is sufficient.

Choosing an LED strip for a display cabinet - what features should you consider?

When choosing an LED strip for showcase lighting, it is important to take several factors into account. The first is the colour temperature - warm white (2 700 K to 3 000 K) brings out objects softly and is pleasing to the eye. For more general lighting or a more modern look, neutral white (4 000 K) can be a good choice.

Another key factor is the uniformity of the light, which is determined by the density of the LED strip: preferably choose a strip with at least 120-240 LEDs per metre, or a strip with no dots, so that the light does not appear as dots.

The third thing to consider is the luminous flux, i.e. how much light the strip produces (e.g. 300-1 000 lm/m). In a small display case, you don't need too much light - in most cases, a moderate output is enough. The width and design of the strip should be chosen according to the space available in the cabinet: a narrow strip is better suited to small profiles and tight spaces. The cut-off spacing of the strip is important, as too long a cut-off spacing makes it difficult to find the right sizing. A cut-off spacing of around 2.5 to 5 cm is already tight enough, and you can start to find free-cut LED strip in the range.

The lighting in the showcase can be operated by remote control, for example. For Zigbee control, a Zigbee driver and a remote control were chosen. The LED strip is a very flat Solo-led strip and the aluminium profile is a low surface profile.

It's also a good idea to check the Colour Rendering Index ( CRI) - CRI90 or higher will bring out the colours of objects naturally. Many strips also come with dimming as standard, for added convenience. Make sure the strip is compatible with the selected controller and power supply.

Installation tips - how to get a neat finish

A neat and functional installation of a Led strip in a display case requires a little care, but is rewarding in the end. Always use an aluminium profile, which acts as both a heat conducting structure and a shield for the strip. The opal shield that comes with the profile diffuses the light more evenly and hides individual LED dots. Fixing can be done with screws, double-sided tape or plastic fasteners depending on the structure of the display case.

The aim is always to hide the wiring behind the frame structures or in the overhead cupboard, leaving only the light - not the technology - visible. Sufficient space should be provided for the power supply and ventilation should be ensured. If the driver is to be omitted altogether, then a mains LED strip may be the right choice.

For small display cases, compact 12V systems can be used, while for larger ones it may make sense to switch to a 24V system. Control can be wireless, or even by a door release sensor, so that the light comes on automatically.

When installing, it is worth testing the direction and effect of the light even before the final fixing. Pre-installed connecting cables and end pieces make the job easier and ensure a neat finish. Installation by a professional is quick and easy, but can also be done by others with good instructions. Weak-current work can be carried out without a professional qualification.
