Motion detectors are great tool to make your lights smart. The only work when there is movement or its dark! We have motion sensors to inside and outside.

Motion sensors

Motion detector with PIR 

These sensors detect heat. They do this by measuring the ambient temperature of the room using  detection beams. When a difference in temperature is detected by  the beams, the sensor is activated and lights turn on. When all the beams sense the same temperature again, the lights will switch off.

These are under sensitive in higher background temperatures and over sensitive in lower temperatures. Usually detects 80-110 degrees area. These have also sensitivity adjust and light sensor.

Motion detection with Microwave

These motion detectors emit microwave signals and measure the time taken for the signal to be reflected back to the sensor. Like echo in radar. The echo time is used to calculate the distances from all the stationary objects in the detection zone, to establish a baseline to work from.

A person moving into the detection zone changes echo time and triggers the lights. These are great when you want motion to trigger before you are in exact area.

Not suitable if there is kids bedroom on other side of the wall because it can sense even thru gyproc wall. Usually works 360 degrees area. These have also sensitivity adjust and light sensor.
