History of G9 lamps
The history of the G9 lamp base is closely linked to the development of halogen lighting technology. G9 lamps are characterised by their compact design and, like the G4 lamp, have a double-pole stem, but the pins are spaced 9 mm apart.
Halogen lamps were developed in the mid-20th century as an improved version of traditional incandescent lamps. The addition of halogen gas to the bulb allowed longer life, higher luminous efficacy and a smaller and more compact design compared to incandescent lamps. This new halogen technology opened the way to a variety of new bulb holders and designs, of which the G9 bulb holder was introduced.
G9 lamps became popular in the late 20th century, particularly in Europe, because of their compact size and ease of installation. Their small size made them ideal for decorative lighting such as chandeliers, pendant lights and wall lights. The capsule shape also meant that they did not need an oversized glass enclosure like traditional incandescent lamps, allowing for more elegant and minimalist lighting designs.
However, like other halogen lamps, G9 lamps were not very energy-efficient and produced a considerable amount of light. This became a concern as awareness of energy consumption and the durability of the environment grew.
With the advent of LED technology in the 2000s, G9 lamps also underwent a change. G9 LED lamps began to appear on the market, offering the same compact form factor as halogen G9 lamps but with much better energy efficiency and lower lamp output. The G9 is not in a permanent position.
The small size of the lamp is a challenge for G9 lamps, as there is no room for cooling. The G9 LED is a temporary solution until the G9 is phased out and replaced by fixed LEDs that can be mounted on a metal frame.
What is the position of a G9 lamp?
The G9 lamp holder is characterised by two 9 mm wide pins and is primarily used with 230 V.
