Light installation – Information on how to install LedStore products.

Suurin osa tuotteista on LedStore-merkkisiä. Muuntajissa luotamme suuressa osassa Mean Wellin tuotteisiin. Teemme myös mitta- ja asennuskäyntejä kuluttaja- ja yritysasiakkaille.

Installation of Led spotlights on the ceiling

Installation of a recessed led luminaire

The installation of LED spotlights on the ceiling is achieved by sawing a mounting hole, where the spotlight is tightly fixed with springs. Spot models 9W and 15W directional and fixed in round and square, known as Kantti, plus the BJ033 spots can be daisy-chained with the Triac dimmable power supply that comes with the spot. The ModLed spot model also has a chainable junction box, the voltage source is built into the module. If necessary, the power supply can be inserted through the mounting hole of the spot for maintenance. Care should be taken with the size of the mounting hole, as some of our models have a rather narrow spot collar. We therefore recommend that you order a model light first, or check the size of the mounting hole with us before drilling the holes. This makes the installation of the led light quick and easy.

Installation depth

The power supply for the 9W and 15W spots is 110x50x35mm. There is no need to install a dome or other fire protection on the ceiling, because the good thing about LEDs is their low operating temperature (around 50-60 degrees). The operating temperature is much lower than in incandescent or halogen lamps, for example, because the light output is based on intense heat. 15W spots and 8W ModLed spots run warmer than 9W spots, so 50 degrees is exceeded, but there is no fire risk with them either. LedStore spots have a cast aluminium body that efficiently conducts heat away along the entire body of the light. This will keep the light cool enough to last a long time. The correct installation of LED spotlights on the ceiling is therefore done by taking into account the structure of the ceiling.

The recess depth, i.e. the space required to install the spot, measured from the bottom of the plasterboard, is specified for each light in the product information. Our most common model (9W directional spotlight, 033) has a depth of 55 mm. The product can be installed directly onto wood or plaster, but we recommend leaving some air on top of the module. Even 1-2 cents is enough for an “air conditioning reserve”. The light must not be installed directly against vapour barrier plastic or wool.

Structure of the upper floor

Due to the structure of the attic, usually facing the room, there is a vapour barrier after the plaster or panel, topped with insulation such as wool. In this case, the led light must be placed between the collimator and the vapour barrier, e.g. a piece of plasterboard left over from drilling a hole. This way the insulators do not push the light downwards. It is also not advisable to install LEDs inside a vapour barrier or other loose insulation, even if the operating temperature is significantly lower than that of halogen, for example. The more space the lamp has to cool down, the cooler it runs, and the cooler it runs, the longer it lasts. The power supplies are separate from the spot, which extends their lifetime as they are separate from the warming light source.

As spotlights are low, the installation of the light can therefore be done in a shallow space. Traditional “two-by-two” or cross-jointing with a 22mm board is sufficient. So, 49x49mm framing + 13mm plaster = 62mm installation space is enough for almost all our spot models.

Led-panel light installation on the ceiling

Recessing of a panel led light

It is also easy to install an LED panel light on the ceiling. Especially if space is limited, the panel is a good choice. Typically, the installation depth for a panel is no more than 22 mm. For flush-mounted panel light, a square opening is cut in the panels and a circular opening in the ceiling, to which the light is tightly fixed with springs. The rectangular panels have four springs, the largest 600×1200 panel has six springs and the round plafonds have two springs. The power supply fits through the mounting hole in all panel lights for maintenance. A panel led light can itself act as a service hatch for other lighting devices. As a tip for sawing a square hole, especially in a flat plaster ceiling, use e.g. a ruler laser, so that the openings are aligned. In our largest panel, 600×1200, the straightness of the roof also plays a role in the success of the installation. For example, in older houses, when lighting is replaced during renovation, there is a risk that the panel will not be evenly positioned.

Installation of a surface mounted light

For panels from size 300 upwards, 50 mm high surface mounting frames are also available and can be purchased separately. For round plafonds, a surface mounting frame is available for model 240. The surface ceilings with fixed surface mounting frame are Surface 160, 280 and 380. In these, the drivers are integral with the lights body. Surface-mounted ceilings also require installation by a professional electrician, as they do not include a lighting socket. Surface mounted panel lights can be found in their own category: surface mounted led panel

Power supplies for panel lights

For smaller panel lights, up to size 240 (diameter mm), the standard size of the power supply is 110x40x25mm. For larger panel lights 600×600, 300×1200 and 600×1200 the size of the power supply increases. As with spotlights, there is no need to install a dome or other fire protection on the ceiling to install the LED panel, because the good thing about LEDs is their low temperature (around 50 degrees Celsius). The operating temperature is much lower than in, for example, incandescent or halogen lamps, where the light output is based on intense heat. LedStore panels feature a cast or framed aluminium frame, and an aluminium backplate that efficiently conducts heat away from the lights LED circuits, which circulate around the lights perimeter. This will keep the light cool enough to last a long time.

About the roof structure

The recess depth, i.e. the space required to install the panel measured from the bottom of the plasterboard, is specified for each light in the product information. The product can be installed directly onto wood or plaster without risk of fire, but we recommend leaving some air on top of the panel or supporting the insulation upwards. 1-2 cents is enough. Due to the structure of the attic, the vapour barrier is usually installed first. In this case, it is advisable to insert transversely between the collimation and the vapour barrier, e.g. board or plasterboardif you suspect that the vapour barrier will not withstand the heat, or the wool will sag. It is not advisable to install a LED inside a vapour barrier or other loose insulation, even if its operating temperature is significantly lower than that of, for example, halogen. The more space the lamp has to cool down, the cooler it runs, and the cooler it runs, the longer it lasts. The power supplies are separate from the driver, and there is a connecting cable of about 20 cm to 40 cm between the panel and the driver, depending on the panel. The driver can be left on top of the panel, or placed to the side of the panel. With an additional cable, the driver can also be led further away from the light, which means that the light can be installed in a different room than the driver.

Because panel lights are low-profile, no high column is required. Traditional “two-by-two” or cross-jointing with a 22mm board is sufficient. That is 49x49mm gauge + 13mm plaster = 62mm installation space for all our panel designs.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

The BULB of the panel light is only 11mm thick, so it can be installed without cutting the cable on any material thicker than 11mm. The highest point of the panel light is the spring (25mm), and the driver which requires a height of 30mm. In the LED light installation picture below, the recommended size is 35mm, to leave 5mm space for the driver before the ceiling.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_single_image image=”52134″ img_size=”250×250″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

Power supplies for LED lights

Each light comes with its own power supply, except for LED strips, where the driver is selected according to the length of the LED strip required and the desired control mode. The power supplies of LED spotlights, LED spotlight kits and track lighting, UPPOAVA series and surface mounted LED panels and LED ceiling lights are dimmable.

The power supplies for LedStore’s flush-mount spots and panels are daisy-chainable. CCT, i.e. colour temperature controlled power supplies (DC power supplies) have a colour temperature selector switch on the side or after the power supply, and a chainable junction box. The junction boxes are either separate from the power supply or in the same housing as the power supply, as shown in the picture below. The colour temperature control on the side of the power supply, on the primary side, must not be adjusted when the light is energised, as this will damage the light. In models where the controller is separate from the power supply, the lamp may be on when the colour temperature is adjusted.

Installation of Led strips

General Led strip installation instructions for all LedStore Led strip types. NOTE! LedStore is not responsible for product failure due to incorrect installation, even during the warranty period.
Read the following instructions to ensure safe installation and use, and the longest possible life for your LED strip. In addition to this guide, please refer to the product information and features of your LED strip on the product pages of the online shop.

  1. Use a transformer suitable for LED strip. The voltage of your Led strip is either 12V or 24V. Your mains transformer must be in the same voltage range as your LED strip. The characteristics of the transformer and the driver will largely determine the use of the LED strip, i.e. dimming or colour temperature/colour change characteristics.
  2. Choose the power supply power so that it covers at least 10-15% more load than the led strip needs. Underloading is not harmful, overloading is harmful.
    – A 14.4 W/m LED strip needs a power supply capable of carrying a load of at least 80 W for five metres. The power of the power supply is calculated by the formula power of the LED strip per metre * required number of metres * 1.1. The multiplier adds a 10% margin so that the power supply is not overloaded.
  3. Choose a moisture-protected strip IP65 for wet areas, unless the led aluminium profile is moisture-protected. The led aluminium profile is resistant to splashing water. Moisture-proof also for dusty areas, unless the profile is used without a diffuser or cover. LedStore aluminium profiles are supplied with a plastic cover.
  4. We do not recommend installing the LED strip in room temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius, as this will shorten the life of the LED strip.
  5. Unroll the LED strip from the roll and check the operation of the LED strip by switching on the power for a short time. Make sure that the LEDs are lit before installing the strip.
NOTE! If the LED strip is on a roll, the testing should only take a short time, a few tens of seconds at most, so that the LED strip does not get too hot while on the roll and start to melt the adhesive tape.
  6. The LED strip must not be folded, pulled or twisted to prevent it from cracking from the inside. If it breaks, typically one or more of the LED circuits between the break points may go out (LED circuits in series), but the other parts of the strip will work (strip sections connected in parallel). The tape can be repaired by removing the damaged section, and re-soldering the tape whole.
  7. Work on the low-current side may be done by the consumer, i.e., the LED strip installation may be done when you are familiar with the subject, and get a plug-in transformer to connect the LED strip to the mains.
  8. The LED strip may be cut and soldered at the points marked on the strip. The tape is marked +. After cutting, any moisture protection is restored with a drop of silicone at the cut point.
  9. LedStore’s LED strips are always mounted on an aluminium profile or metal to ensure that the heat generated by the LED strip is dissipated and the strip’s promised operating hours of around 50 000 are achieved.

Led wall light installation

LedStore offers a range of wall lights that can be installed both inside and outside. All wall lights have their own power supply in the body of the light, and the light is installed directly into the mains. The lights are not chainable. Most wall lights are not dimmable. Exceptions are the FUNK wall lamp, and the XL Cubic with triac dimmable power supply. Some wall lights are also available with a plug-in lead on request (Led wall light Night, Night Blade and Loop). Installation instructions included in the package.

Led pendant light installation

LedStore’s pendant lights are largely installable by an electrician, as they do not come with a lighting socket. They have fixed light sources. The mains power cables in most lights are in the switch frame (quick connector). All LedStore pendant lights are installed by removing the hook cover and attaching the mounting cup directly to the ceiling. RINKELI lamps have screw locations directly on the glass.

Installation of Led courtyard pillars

Yard-mounted pillars are mains-powered, non-retractable, fixed-lighting fixtures that are attached by an electrician from their mounting plate to either the mounting foot, or to the terrace deck. Pillar FUNK and Pillar TILT2 have a hollow body, so they can be chained inside the tube. Otherwise generally chained, for example in a film box next to a lamp.

Installation of Led mirrors

LED mirrors include a plug so you can install the mirror yourself at home. The plug can also be removed and the light mirror can be permanently installed. The mirrors are hung on 2-4 screws. The mirror frame has pre-drilled holes for the screw heads, but you can drill new holes for screws anywhere in the tubular frame if necessary.

Led track lighting installation

ZOOM and FOKUS three-phase track-mounted lights can also be installed by the consumer, as the light is attached to the track with an easy quick-release fastener. Phase 1, 2 or 3 is selected from the rotary control on the power supply of the track lighting. FOKUS track lights also allow you to select the colour temperature. LedStore does not directly sell 3-phase rail. The rail usually comes with the electrician, also installed by us.

Led light installation – enclosure classifications, dust and moisture protection

LedStore’s lights and ballasts/power supplies are available in a wide range of enclosure classes to suit different needs and spaces. Moisture and dust protection ranges from IP21 (direct overhead drip-proof, for dry installation) to IP67 (dust and waterproof). The picture below shows examples of installation locations in the home yard, and examples of suitable LedStore products.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”52131″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Installation of a led light in a damp area

The installation of the light takes into account the protection classes of the light. Here is a list of typical IP categories:

  • IP21 led luminaires: suitable for locations where the water point can be measured at least 120cm, on the ceiling if the room height is at least 225cm.
  • IP44 led luminaires: all lighting locations, at least 170cm from the floor.
  • IP54 led luminaires: the same rules apply as for IP44 bathroom luminaires.
  • IP65 led luminaires: applies the same rules as IP44 bathroom luminaires, but the luminaire itself is resistant to direct water.

Please note that for bathroom lighting matters in the IP class only the latter number matters. The first number is the dust classification.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

When installing in humid areas, we recommend that you comply with e.g. Guidelines / regulations issued by Tukes on the placement of electrical equipment in bathrooms and showers in residential buildings.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Lights installation – Lighting control

LedStore led lights can be installed in a wide range of light controls, from on/off switch operation, to programmable colour control. The main part of light control, i.e. dimming and possible colour temperature (CCT), or colour (RGB) control, is the choice of driver/power supply. Almost all of our led lights and LED strips are 24VDC DC voltage controlled, making systems based on DALI (monochrome and CCT, RGB lights), TRIAC (monochrome lights), PUSH DIM (monochrome lights) and 1-10V (monochrome lights) controls compatible with our lights.

In addition, wireless control systems are also known as RF or radio frequency (closed loop, “basic” wireless control systems).

Zigbee-based (open standard) control modes. For these applications, we have a range of buttons and receivers / drivers with receivers in our own range.

Lighting control for installation

All control systems have the same installation method. The lights (led panels, led spots, led strip) will have a group driver or control unit that controls all the lights connected to it. So there will be no drivers for the lights.

LedStore lights are largely 24V CCT controllable, so the installation work after the driver is up to you.

We have written an article on Zigbee smart control from an installer’s perspective.

Home control systems, for which we have luminaires:

  • on/off for use with virtually all lamps
  • for dimming of triac-powered luminaires, i.e. most of our luminaires, we use TRIAC transformers such as Casambi, Plejd, etc. and DALI transformers are available for panels, spots, LED strips for installation in KNX systems, etc.
  • Colour temperature control CCT or colour adjustable RGB transformer types DALI, RF Zigbee, “basic” RF. Bridges and applications for the Zigbee protocol are available from Philips, Samsung, Tuya, IKEA, Google, Home Assistant, etc.

We have reported more on dimming here: https://ledstore.pro/info/dimming

You can find lots of information about smart control in our blog posts, by searching for the word Zigbee in the content. Or find information by visiting the Zigbee category.

Installation is often electrical work

Reminder! Bear in mind that you are not allowed to install all the lights yourself. It may sound easy, but with the help of an installer you can do it safely and securely. For large lights, two men are often needed.

Frequently asked questions about installation

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_toggle title=”I WANT TO REPLACE AN OLD LIGHT SOCKET IN THE KITCHEN. CAN I DO IT MYSELF?”]

You can’t. It’s about electrical work. The installer removes the socket and replaces it with a corner socket (led strip for installations) or a new socket

[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”INSTALLATION OF THE CEILING LIGHT ITSELF: ON THE HOOK COVER”]

The hook cover is the traditional white cover with a J-shaped hook sticking out of it and a plug for the harness. These are present in all new sites.

If you have a lamp with a hanging loop and a plug ready, you don’t need us or other installers. Connect the plug and hang the lamp. Ready.

If the harness is missing a plug, they are sold in all hardware stores and supermarkets. They usually come with a sugar cube/switch strip. Wires together with the same colours opposite each other. Plug in and light the house.

[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”THESE ARE EASY, CAN YOU INSTALL THE PENDANT LIGHT YOURSELF?”]

Always remember to turn off the fuse before installing the lamp to ensure safety! Ns. The connection of fixed lights is permitted only by a qualified electrician. Leave the installation of your ceiling light bulb to a professional if you don’t know what you’re doing – Electrical safety first!

[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”I ORDERED THE INSTALLATION OF A LED LIGHT I ALSO HAVE OTHER ELECTRICAL WORK TO DO, DO YOU DO THAT TOO?”]

We do not. We only do installations of lights.

[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”INSTALLATION OF A CEILING LIGHT IN A JEWEL CASE”]

LedStore’s RINKELI or Pintaplafondi ights go directly on top of the glass box. Many other lights can also be installed directly in the jewellery box if they have a mounting rail and ready-made screw holes for the same hole spacing. The existing hook cover must be removed and the lamp’s own mounting bracket with the same screws to the ceiling. If the wires are clearly marked brown and blue, the sugarcane installation is done by connecting the correct colours to each other.

If you don’t know what you’re doing or are in any doubt. Call an installer. Always remember to turn off the fuse first!

[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”DIY CEILING LIGHT INSTALLATION: JUST A HOOK AND A SUGAR CUBE”]

In older homes, only wires come out of the roof and maybe a hook next to it. Installing these requires attention to detail. If you don’t have a sugar cube in the ceiling and the wires are a strange colour, I recommend an installation service. If everything is clearly marked in brown and blue, the installation of the sugar lights will be successful by matching the correct colours to each other and the safe installation of the light. Always remember to turn off the fuse first.

[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”INSTALLATION OF A CEILING LIGHT DIRECTLY ON THE CEILING”]

For example, the surface frame of a Panel 600×600 or 600×1200 light is so large that they cannot be attached to a pedestal. They must be installed directly on the ceiling. First I screwed in the frames and then I cast. Other similar mounting methods can be found in larger pendant lights.

Note! Ceiling mounted led light can be interpreted as a fixed light fitting, the installation of which is only permitted to an electrician. If you don’t know what you’re doing or are in any doubt. Call an installer. Always remember to turn off the fuse first!

[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”INSTALLATION OF A RECESSED LED LIGHT”]

Recessed lights are usually spotlights or Led panels/led plafonds. In these, the electricity is carried from light to light inside the ceiling and is fixed to the light. The installation of recessed lights is electrical work if the operating voltage of the light exceeds 36V. You should also check the wiring inside the structures.

For example, although LedStore’s CCT adjustable lights are 24V and you can install them yourself with their own wiring harness, it may make sense to ask for help.

If you don’t know what you’re doing or are in any doubt. Call an installer. Always remember to turn off the fuse first!
