    Electrical installations for saunas

The electrical installation of saunas must meet the requirements of the SFS 6000 electrical installation standard, part 7-703.

Electrical installations in saunas are exposed to high temperatures, high humidity and splash water. Therefore, special requirements are imposed on the installation of saunas and the installation accessories used, for example with regard to the required enclosure class and heat resistance and the permitted installation locations for electrical equipment.

    Safety distances in saunas

In zones 1, 2 and 3, the placement of electrical equipment in the sauna is limited according to the temperature effect in the sauna.

    • Zone 1 - Here you may only place the stove and associated equipment
    • Zone 2- There are no specific requirements for the heat resistance of the equipment. However, attention should be paid to the likely temperature conditions at the installation site, for example when installing equipment above the level of the upper surface of the heater in the sauna.
    • Zone 3 - Electrical equipment installed here must have a minimum thermal resistance of 125oC and a minimum thermal resistance of 170oC for wiring.

    Sauna lighting installations

The electrical installation of the sauna shall be carried out in strict accordance with the installation instructions for all equipment to be installed. All basic cables shall be placed on the cold side of the thermal insulation (in the cable trays). Heat-resistant cables may also be placed on the warm side of the insulation if necessary.

It should be noted, for example, that not all lighting kits are resistant to the heat of the sauna, even if they are otherwise of a suitable enclosure class for a damp room.

In zone 1, no equipment other than that associated with the heater may be installed above the heater. For example, no LED lights may be installed above the heater. If directional lighting is desired above the stove, then fibre optics, for example, should be used instead, and the light source itself should be located elsewhere.
